Assessing student learning in AI-assisted academic writing

02.10.2025, 12:30-13:30 CEST

Hybrid

TU/e

Can we assess student learning in written assignments when AI is allowed in the classroom? This lunch session by Manuel Oliveira and Carlos Zednik (Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences department) introduces a practical framework for evaluating student learning by examining how they interact with AI tools, which shifts the focus from the final text to the learning process itself. Based on research at TU/e, you will learn about what type of GenAI use connects with learning evidence and quality of writing.

07.10.2025, 12:30-13:30 CEST

Hybrid

TU/e

In this session by Rick Erkens and Tom Verhoeff (Mathematics and Computer Science department), we will look at shortcomings of commonly used assessment plans by examining some examples and experiences. Then we will discuss some guidelines for improvement suggested by the literature, and some of their attempts at implementing those guidelines. Since each course is different, there is no perfect one-method-to-rule-them-all. We would love to hear your experiences and feedback on this topic as well.Albeit it is not the role of a university lecturer to therapeutically heal, help or assist a student in need - how to respond and act appropriately in such a circumstance, however, very much is.

In this workshop we will elucidate the specific and general risk factors for mental issues in students, discuss different profiles of mental illnesses and train effective ways of communication and referral - and all this while exercising a healthy amount of self-care and mindfulness.

TU/e

We warmly invite you to join the upcoming ALT/TEACH/CEE session led by Inés López Arteaga (Dean, Bachelor College), where we will present and discuss the results of the 2025 Teaching Cultures Survey. This international survey is part of a global initiative among universities striving to improve the status of teaching and learning in higher education. Like many other universities, TU/e is actively working on systemic changes to academic career pathways and the recognition of teaching achievements—most notably through the Recognition & Rewards program. The survey offers valuable insights into how academic communities perceive and experience the culture of teaching. It consists of three cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2019, 2022, and most recently in Spring 2025.

Hybrid

TU/e

One challenge in large-scale CBL projects is ensuring consistency between tutors in guiding student groups and safeguarding the designed open-endedness of the CBL project. To that end, Willem-Bart Bartels and Apoorva Sonawane (Mechanical Engineering department) developed the Tutor CBL Web — a visual instructional tool for tutor training, which they will share in this lunch session. It shows the open-endedness in various CBL aspects using constructive alignment and links tutoring approaches to levels of open-endedness.

Writing theses is a very complex and challenging task which is usually mastered over many years of practice. Supervising this process is nearly as complex and requires various competencies: supervisors need to support students during their writing processes without interfering insufficiently or too much. Today, they even need to deal with the fact that their students use AI-tools like ChatGPT in their academic writing. In this course, we reflect these and other challenges and build up the necessary skills to address them properly. Please note: This course focuses on how to supervise students in their project of writing their theses, and not how they work, for example, in the laboratory.

Please save about 3 hours between the synchronous meetings, during which you have time to prepare sessions 2 and 3.

But… How do I know if a flipped class is right for me and my course? What is to be done if students don’t complete the self-study assignments? What types of activities can be done in class? These questions will be explored in this workshop.
