Using humour in the classroom
This online workshop aims to help lecturers to use humour in the classroom successfully. We will discuss how humour can be used as a tool to boost content retention and to heighten our rapport with students.
Although we will discuss some theory related to humour, the main design of the course is to be as practical as possible. It will provide participants with a range of techniques designed to bring fun and humour to the classroom, and participants will practise a number of techniques themselves through controlled exercises.
As well as considering good practice, the course will also point out types of humour to avoid, including forms of humour that may be culturally inappropriate or offensive.
By the end of the course, participants will feel more confident in integrating humour into their classroom activities in order to create a memorable learning environment.

But what does it mean to think critically in general and in different disciplines? How do different theoretical concepts such as logic, epistemology, ethics or cognitive biases relate to critical thinking? And how should the effective promotion of critical thinking in teaching be designed? The seminar will focus on theoretical concepts, empirical studies and a didactic process model for the design of thinking training. The use of digital media like ChatGPT, in order to foster critical thinking, will also be addressed. Supervising Students Theses in the Age of AI (X260) | Online Meetings: 22.02.2027 09:00 - 12:00 CET 01.03.2027 09:00 - 12:00 CET 08.03.2027 09:00 - 12:00 CET | Online | TUM | Writing theses is a very complex and challenging task which is usually mastered over many years of practice. Supervising this process is nearly as complex and requires various competencies. The influence of AI-tools like ChatGPT today makes both processes even more challenging: supervisors need to define and transparently communicate their expectations of the writing process and AI use. They need to support students during their writing with or without AI knowing when to interfere or not. They need to know about the pitfalls of the writing process with or without AI and need to address them constructively. In the end, they need to assess their students’ theses objectively even if AI was used. In this course, we reflect these and other challenges and build up the necessary skills to address them properly. *Please note*: This course focuses on how to supervise students in their process of writing theses (with or without AI), and not how they work, for example, in the laboratory. Please reserve about 2 hours to prepare each of the 3 sessions.
