Teaching Science and Engineering | Self-study (MOOC) 30 March - 07 June 2026 | online (edX) | EPFL | Some people think that teaching is simply a matter of knowing the content material and having the right kind of personality and experience. In fact, research evidence suggests that people can become effective teachers if they learn: (1) the content of their discipline, (2) the different ways students learn this content and the problems they face with it, and (3) how to manage learning in practice in a classroom. This MOOC focuses on the second and third of these elements. The ways in which students learn in science and engineering programs, and the problems they typically face, have been the subject of a great deal of research in the last two decades. We have based this MOOC on that research evidence, with a focus on the ways in that teaching assistants can help students to maximise their learning in university-level programmes. Teaching is a hands-on activity and to learn how to teach you will need practical experience. Alongside such practical experience, this MOOC will help you understand what strategies are likely to be appropriate and why, and will also give you some guidance on when and where to use them. While classroom experience is valuable, this MOOC can equip you with the knowledge to plan and evaluate your own teaching and to make good decisions in the classroom. In this MOOC we have tried to practice what we preach. You will find, therefore, that in addition to watching videos you will be encouraged to take notes, to sometimes stop the video and complete thinking tasks, and to test your own recall and understanding of the material with quiz questions and forum prompts. We would encourage you to use these opportunities to learn but also to reflect upon them and to ask yourself if you could do something similar in your own teaching. | Registration and further information here. Using Storytelling Principles to simplify complex content | Self-Study Phase 13.04.2026 - 27.04.2026 Online-Meetings: 20.04.2026 12:30 - 16:30 CEST 23.04.2026 13:00 - 15:00 CEST 27.04.2026 12:30 - 16:30 CEST | Online (Hybrid) | TUM | Everyone is talking about storytelling. Some guides now say: "Just use storytelling elements, and your audience will love your presentation." But what does a hero's journey have to do with university lecture content? What should we learn from movies like "Star Wars" to comprehend topics from mathematics or chemistry? Storytelling has more to offer than heroic tales. In this course, you will learn how to explain topics in a way that is understandable to your target audience, using principles inspired by stories. Please bring a topic to the first meeting that you need help explaining to your students. | Registration and additional information here: Write an e-mail to weiterbildung@prolehre.tum.de, Mention you are from EuroTeQ registration deadline 10.04.2026 Cost: € 60,00 |

Supervising Students Theses in the Age of AI | Self-Study Phase 12.06.2026 - 26.06.2026 Online-Meetings 12.06.2026 09:00 - 12:00 CEST 19.06.2026 09:00 - 12:00 CEST 26.06.2026 09:00 - 12:00 CEST | Online | TUM | Writing theses is a very complex and challenging task which is usually mastered over many years of practice. Supervising this process is nearly as complex and requires various competencies: supervisors need to support students during their writing processes without interfering insufficiently or too much. They need to define and transparently communicate their expectations as well as evaluate their students’ theses objectively. They need to know about the pitfalls of the writing process and need to address them constructively. Today, they even need to deal with the fact that their students use AI-tools like ChatGPT in their academic writing. In this course, we reflect these and other challenges and build up the necessary skills to address them properly. *Please note*: This course focuses on how to supervise students in their project of writing their theses, and not how they work, for example, in the laboratory. Course participants require a stable internet connection (best by a LAN cable) via computer or laptop, as well as a microphone and webcam. Please save about 3 hours between the synchronous meetings, during which you have time to prepare sessions 2 and 3. | Registration and additional information here: Write an e-mail to weiterbildung@prolehre.tum.de, Mention you are from EuroTeQ registration deadline 02.06.2026 |
